Festival to Support Arts & Music in Portland’s
Jefferson School Cluster

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 2, 2010) — Arts and music programs at Portland’s Jefferson High School and its cluster of feeder elementary schools will soon receive a much appreciated boost from its alumni association in the form of a weeklong music festival starting Saturday, September 25th. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to bringing the arts and music program back to the schools.

“Many can remember when the arts magnet program at Jefferson High meant they were the marching band we wanted to see at the Rose Festival Parade. And then there was the choir that rocked stages throughout our community,” said Maggie Mashia, Music Festival Administrator and president of the Jefferson High School Alumni Association. “Through the Rose City Music Festival we hope to revive the arts program here, and bring those sources of civic pride back to the Jefferson High School community and the city of Portland.”

Presenting sponsor, Hasson Company Realtors and many others have joined together to help make the event a success. The event will include three days of performances spanning a week that promises to offer something for everyone with music from jazz, R&B and hip hop to soul and classical, and dance performances to keep the audience on their feet.  All students in the Jefferson Cluster will receive free tickets to the Saturday, Oct. 2nd afternoon performances and proceeds will be dedicated to bringing the arts and music programs back to the Jefferson High School cluster.

The positive affect arts education offers for all students is well-documented. The discipline required for consistent practice, the emotional rush of performance, and the exposure to new ideas and cultures through creativity all contribute greatly to the development of young and older minds alike.

“The all-day performance on Saturday, October 2nd will cap off what promises to be a joyful celebration of the arts, bringing our community together to support our immediate need and to look toward long term solutions for arts education in our schools,” added Mashia.

Instrument Recycling

Everyone is encouraged to literally “Help Bring the Music Back to Jeff!” Maggie Mashia is asking everyone to look through their attics, garages, hall closets, and under beds for band instruments that aren’t being used and are in good working order. She says,” If you would like to give them a great new home, please bring them to Jefferson High School on Saturday, October 2nd. A tent will be set up on the Kerby Avenue side of the school and volunteers will happily take them off your hands and give you a receipt to use as a tax deduction.”
